Sunflower Oil

Clients often ask about the properties of essential oils but don’t realise that carrier oils each have their own characteristics too. So, as I have time over the coming weeks, I’m going to look at some different carrier oils…this will be good revision for me too 🙂

Sunflower Oil (Helianthus Annus) is one of my favourite carrier oils as it penetrates the skin well without leaving an oily residue. It has a slight, pleasant aroma and is an effective emolliant (softens and sooths). It is produced by extracting oil from the seeds of the sunflower.

Benefits of Sunflower Carrier Oil

  • Good for mature, sensitive and dry skin types
  • Beneficial for skin complaints and bruises
  • Softens and moisturises skin
  • Often used in blends to help acne

Properties of Sunflower Oil

  • Contains Vitamin A, D and E
  • High in essential fatty acids (including linoleic acid)

Sunflower oil is widely available and can be used on it’s own or mixed with other carrier oils to enhance the properties of the total blend. (For example: blend with a small amount of avocado oil which is exceptional good for dry skin problems but not suitable for using on it’s own as it is thick and can stain due to it’s slight green colouring).
